COASTAL LOUISIANA, TEN YEARS AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA

The following photos illustrate reconstruction progress in 2015 and compare hurricane impacts on selected locations in Plaquemines Parish following Hurricane Katrina.

Post-Katrina vs 2015

2006 - The school campus in Buras, LA (elementary school through high school) suffered extensive damage due to strong wind forces as well as storm surge (and associated debris impact). Maximum still water height during Katrina was over 10 feet at this site.
Completed in 2012, the new school faculty housing (32 apartments) has been constructed on the former site of the Buras school campus. The upper residential levels are 16 feet above the ground level.

Competed in 2013, the Plaquemines Medical Center in Port Sulphur offers urgent and primary care services. The facility includes a rooftop heliport.
The Medical Center care areas are 23-feet above grade. Emergency vehicle ramp (background) provides direct access at the second level.
